When Amanda Palmer did her Bowie covers last year here on Bandcamp she charged USD $1 per download with ¢54 going to "Bowie's publisher for the use of the songs" - now, I can't find out who his publisher for the song Station To Station is; subsequently, I have made my cover of said song available to download here for free. If "Bowie's publisher" wishes to get in touch with me and demand their 50-odd cents for the zero copies of this that nobody is going to download for free anyway, well then they are more than welcome to do so.
Recorded in Stretford, Manchester and Hackney, London between 3rd-7th January 2017
This is the first year in a few that I won't be in Los Angeles at this time of year. President Donald J. Trump assumes office one day before my birthday this year; Lazarus closes its London run one day after. David Bowie would have been 70 today but he died a year ago. I don't know where all these disjointed thoughts are going; I'm a bit lost in my own circle.
I've been talking about covering this song (with Simon Love, ex-The Loves and Knickers; lately of Simon Love & The Old Romantics) since at least 2004. It's specifically a 'studio' cover of the 1978 live version from the Stage LP. Seemed like as good a time as any to get it did. I can't sing for toffee but I hope you enjoy it. Thanks very much to Chris from Hot Shorts for persevering with me and recording and mixing most everything at such short notice; and extra special thanks to Simon & Buzz for playing with me, too.
Here's some interesting reading on the background of this, my favourite Bowie track, some of which certainly seems timely ("Bowie was tasting what was already in the air in Europe, a resurgence of interest in fascism and Nazism"): bowiesongs.wordpress.com/2010/12/23/station-to-station
lyrics
The return of the thin white duke throwing darts in lovers' eyes
Here are we one magical moment
Such is the stuff from where dreams are woven
Bending sound
Dredging the ocean lost in my circle
Here am I
Flashing no colour tall in this room overlooking the ocean
Here are we one magical movement from Kether to Malkuth
There are you
You drive like a demon from station to station
The return of the thin white duke throwing darts in lovers' eyes
The return of the thin white duke throwing darts in lovers' eyes
The return of the thin white duke making sure white stains
Once there were mountains on mountains
And once there were sunbirds to soar with
And once I could never be down
Got to keep searching and searching
And oh what will I be believing and who will connect me with love?
Wonder who wonder who wonder when
Have you sought fortune evasive and shy
Drink to the men who protect you and I
Drink drink drain your glass
Raise your glass high
It's not the side effects of the cocaine
I'm thinking that it must be love
It's too late to be grateful
It's too late to be late again
It's too late to be hateful
The European canon is here
I must be only one in a million
I won't let the day pass without her
It's too late to be grateful
It's too late to be late again
It's too late to be hateful
The European canon is here
Should I believe that I've been stricken
Does my face show some kind of glow?
It's too late to be grateful
It's too late to be late again
It's too late to be hateful
The European canon is here
